One of the leading brands of paint and varnish products in Russia — Tikkivala (formerly Tikkurila) — will present an eco-friendly novelty at the MosBuild 2025 exhibition: Kiva Decor furniture varnish. The product does not contain formaldehyde in its composition, does not emit it into the air and was the first to receive official confirmation of this according to the new methodology of the Ecological Union.
The market for eco-friendly building materials is showing steady growth, following the global trend for safe and eco-friendly products. In Russia, this trend is also gaining momentum: 68% of the country's residents pay special attention to safety and health, and environmental characteristics are among the top 5 priorities when choosing products for construction and repair. At the same time, paints and varnishes, wood boards, adhesives and other materials often contain hazardous substances, in particular formaldehyde. The new methodology for verifying eco-statements of the Ecological Union gives companies the opportunity to reliably and independently confirm that their products do not contain formaldehyde. The methodology was created taking into account the experience of developing eco-labeling standards for the life cycle "Leaf of Life", and the list of formaldehyde donors is formed in accordance with data from the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).
"According to Russian legislation, the presence of formaldehyde in products is permitted. For example, the level of formaldehyde migration from paint and varnish coatings should not exceed 0.01 mg/m3. Whereas, in accordance with the requirements of the Ecological Union methodology, this indicator should be below the detection limit of devices - less than 0.003 mg/m3. In addition, the product formulation should not contain sources of emission (donors) of formaldehyde," comments Ksenia Yeseva , ecologist, leading expert of the Ecological Union.
A new product from the Tikkivala brand, Kiva Decor furniture varnish, was the first to pass the Ecological Union test and received confirmation that its composition does not contain formaldehyde or its donors, and the varnish coating does not emit formaldehyde.
